TORRENCE FINISHES QUALIFYING IN NO. 1 POSITION AT CHEROKEE COUNTY
MOTORSPORTS PARK
RUSK, Texas - In the final rounds of qualifying at the NHRA
Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Cherokee County Motorsports Park, Top
Alcohol Dragster driver Steve Torrence remained in the top spot while in Top
Alcohol Funny Car action Jimmy Jones claimed the No.1 position.
Torrence, a rookie driver from Kilgore, Texas, did not improve
on his initial top qualifying pass of 5.513 seconds at 255.58 mph but the
numbers were enough to keep him ahead of the field. No. 2 qualifier James
Thompson of Vernon, Texas, did improve his number but not enough to get past
Torrence. Thompson was the No. 1 qualifier at the division's last two
races. Although Torrence was a longtime Super Comp competitor, this is just
his fourth race in the Alcohol ranks. So far he has been runner-up and
scored two wins, including the NHRA national event in Topeka, Kan.
For Jones, of Cleburne, Texas, his 5.900-second, 243.85 mph pass
was enough to set the pace in his class. The top qualifier after Friday's
session, Jackie Stidham of Chickasha, Okla., did not improve on Friday's
pass, which allowed Jones to pass him. Jones has made final-round
appearances at the division's last three events. He won two of them and was
runner-up to Stidham at the last race.
In Comp Eliminator, Craig Bourgeois of Matairie, La., is the top
qualifier while J. Adger Smith of Texarkana, Ark., and Fred Henson of
Maidsonville, Texas, set the pace in Super Stock and Stock Eliminator,
respectively. Keith Raferty, Lake Charles, La., was No. 1 in Top Sportsman,
Billy Pannell, Doline, La., was No. 1 in Sportsman Motorcycle, and Houston's
John Garner led the pack in Top Dragster.
Racing continues Sunday at Cherokee County Motorsports Park. Gates open at
8 a.m. and eliminations start at 9 a.m. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top
Alcohol Funny Car run first round of eliminations at noon.
Tickets for are $20 for adults and $5 for children 6 to 12. Kids 5 and
under are admitted free with a paid adult. For more information call
