NHRA Warren Johnson Friday Update: WJ Opens Joliet qualifying
in Third
Event: 8th Annual Carquest Auto Parts Nationals
Day/Date: Friday, June 10, 2005
Location: Route 66 Raceway, Joliet, Illinois
Warren Johnson had a solid first day of qualifying for the Carquest Auto
Parts Nationals in Joliet, IL. After opening with a 6.805-second,
203.52 mph pass, the GM Performance Parts Pontiac pilot came back in the
rain-delayed evening session to improve to a 6.783-second elapsed time.
Sitting in the third position at the Route 66 Raceway qualifying
midpoint, Johnson was already focusing on bettering his position during
Saturday's final sessions.
"They weren't what you would call technically perfect runs, but they
were certainly competitive. After all, we're much closer to the top of
the page than we are the bottom. We just need to tune this GM
Performance Parts Pontiac up and move up a couple positions. It's
plenty fast, we simply need to make a clean run.
"With the exception of the first sixty feet, it stepped up right where
we wanted it to in the evening run. In fact, we were the quickest car
from sixty feet to the 330-foot mark, which we were naturally happy
about. If we can step it up in the first sixty feet, we'll be fine."
