NHRA Kurt Johnson Friday Update: KJ Sits Second on Friday in Joliet

Event: 8th Annual Carquest Auto Parts Nationals

Day/Date: Friday, June 10, 2005

Location: Route 66 Raceway, Joliet, Illinois

Kurt Johnson and the ACDelco Cobalt Racing team faced varying
atmospheric conditions during the first day of qualifying for the
Carquest Auto Parts Nationals. The opening session was held in the
mid-afternoon sun with temperatures in the 90's and humidity to match,
while the second run was delayed by rain showers, pushing it into the
evening hours with the lower temperatures producing different tuning
conditions.

Through it all, Johnson's team stayed the course, posting the quickest
elapsed time and top speed of the opening session at 6.786 seconds
203.98 mph, and improving to a 6.783-second time on his second attempt,
slotting the second-generation racer in the second spot midway through
qualifying.

"We changed a bunch of things before coming out here and our ACDelco
Cobalt really responded. We made a few adjustments for this evening's
run, and although we improved on our time and learned something, it
wasn't enough to keep us on the pole.

"Fortunately, it's gotten to the point where I can now tune it similar
to my Cavalier. We take this information, make the necessary changes,
and come out tomorrow ready to pick up the pace, starting with the first
round of the King Demon (an all-star event for the top eight qualifiers
in Pro Stock over the last year, which will be held as part of
tomorrow's activities."
