TORRECNE, STIDHAM GRAB WINS IN MEMPHIS

	MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Steve Torrence in Top Alcohol Dragster and
defending Top Alcohol Funny Car South Central division Champion Jackie
Stidham took home wins at this weekend's TCI Sportsman Challenge NHRA
Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series.
	Torrence, of Kilgore, Texas, recorded the low elapsed time of
the event in the final round with a 5.433 second pass at 259.91 mph to
defeat veteran racer Gene Snow. Snow, who defeated Torrence last month
at Red River Raceway, took out national point's leader Ashley Force in
round one before going down to Torrence in the Final.
	Stidham grabbed his second win of the season with a run of 5.829
seconds at 245.67 mph over division point's leader Jimmy Jones. The
Chickasha, Okla., racer scored his first win of the season last month at
S.R.C.A. Dragstrip in Great Bend, Kan.
	Home town favorite George Cox of Memphis, Tenn., held off Steven
Hall for the win in Stock Eliminator. Cox ran his '97 Trans Am to a
winning run of 11.585 seconds at 110.39 mph.
	Rodger Brogdon grabbed the win in Comp Eliminator over Scott
Cashio with a run of 7.948 seconds at 167.01 mph while Jeremy Duncan won
in Super Stock over Dan Carter 
	Tommy Phillips nearly doubled up on in the winner's circle
taking home the win on Super Comp then taking a runner-up finish to
Super Gar winner Jesse Serna of El Paso, Texas.
	Other racers joining in on the winner's circle celebration were
Glenn Knapp in Super Street; Rich Gentili over Craig Treble in Sportsman
Motorcycle; Bert Prejean of St. Amant, La., in the Sunset Racecraft Top
Sportsman class; and Jeff Pitman in the TCI Comp Cams Top Dragster
category.
The South Central Division racers head to Cherokee County Motorsports
Park for the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event next week,
June 10-12
