Milwaukee Mile - Kimmel Captures Checkers in ARCA RE/MAX

MILWAUKEE MILE
100 YEARS AND ACCELERATING
MILWAUKEE (June 4, 2005) - Frank Kimmel knows a thing or two about
winning races in the ARCA RE/MAX Series. The six-time series champion
charged through the field after a lap 47 pit stop to lead a total of 89
of the 150 laps in this afternoon's ARCA RE/MAX 150 race at The
Milwaukee Mile, and captured his 59th ARCA checkered flag.
Kimmel had to withstand the pesky challenges of hungry young drivers
Chad Blount, then Joey Miller, to withstand two caution flags and
subsequent single-file restarts in the final laps to secure his first
win of 2005.
After the race, Kimmel fondly recalled the last time he visited the
historic speedway with his brother Bill to watch their father, Bill,
Sr., race in a USAC Stock Car race in 1980. There had been seven
previous ARCA-sanctioned races at The Milwaukee Mile, the last coming in
1983.
Kimmel now joins Rodger Ward, Tony Bettenhausen, Sr. and Fred Lorenzen
as ARCA winners on the historic, legendary fairgrounds oval.
"It meant a lot to really win here," said Kimmel. "It's amazing when you
consider the list of winners through the years. We had the choice of
running a Mark Martin car or a Matt Kenseth car (that are now owned by
Kimmel's team), and we decided we needed to bring the Matt Kenseth car
since we were in Wisconsin. I thought it was a good race all the way
around. I just feel very fortunate to get to race for a living."
Miller, a 20 year-old series rookie, battled back from a lap down to
finish second, and remains within reach of Kimmel in second in the point
standings. "We had a lot of issues with the car," said Miller. "We had
that tire go down under green. Then we got penalized for speeding on pit
road, so we overcame a lot and had a good points day. Frank Kimmel
finished before us, but with more time, we think we had him."
A two-time winner already this season, Blount held on to finish third
behind Milller.
Roush Racing development driver Erik Darnell, a third-generation driver
in his career-first start, finished fourth in his Roulo
Brothers-Reliance-Simply Wow Ford. Three-time Daytona ARCA winner Bobby
Gerhart charged from his 14th starting position to finish fifth.
