Bloomington Speedway Rained Out Again
BLOOMINGTON, IN (June 4, 2005) - It is said that no experience is wasted so long as we learn something from it. I think that it's safe to say that we at Bloomington Speedway have learned something over the past four weeks. That would be that you can't trust the d... weatherman. You can't trust him to be right; and you can't trust him to be wrong. As we stood around doing a postmortem on our latest wrong guess, we discussed various techniques that we might employ to change Mike Miles' luck. At this point no idea was being dismissed out of hand. Rainouts don't pay well for the competitors; however, the competitors come out much better than the promoter. This is my own observation, not a comment from Mike. Mike fully accepts that rainouts go with the territory; and he has faith that the luck will, over time, even itself out. Of course, he'd rather the bad luck didn't come four weeks in a row; but he's not asking for sympathy. He has, each week, made his decision to cancel or not cancel his Friday night race based on the best information at his disposal and in the best interest of his fans and competitors. To that end, he has tried to make the call as early as possible to give both the fans and the competitors the opportunity to make other plans.
Because the radar showed a sea of green, it appeared that another rainout was likely last night. Therefor, Mike announced that he would make the call at 2:00 PM. Until nearly two o'clock it looked like the rain would miss us. However, about that time we got a good hard rain. Based on his pledge to make the call at two o'clock, he announced another rainout. His words had barely ceased echoing around the race track when the rain stopped and the sun came out.
All of our attempts to second-guess the weather have obviously been well short of successful. The only rational course of action is to announce a policy and trust that it will work out better. We're going to stick with it. Unless we are absolutely certain that a show will be rained out, we will operate on the assumption that we are going to race until four p.m. We will then do everything possible to get it in. By doing this we should be right more than half of the time.
That's enough about the weather problems of the past. It's now time to concentrate on next Friday night when we will run the second biggest event of our season - The Sheldon Kinser Memorial. Plan now to be with us on June 10 to see which driver will be the next Sheldon Kinser Memorial champion.
