Little 500 Qualifying

FEDEWA TAKES "LITTLE 500" POLE; GORDON STARTS 9TH

Tom Fedewa of Dimondale, Mich., son of two-time “Little 500” pole
winner Gary Fedewa, won the pole for the 2005 running off the PayLess/Remy
International “Little 500” sprint car classic Thursday afternoon at the
Anderson (Ind.) Speedway in his Dowker Engines Special. The two Fedewas
become the first father-son combo ever to claim pole starting spots for the
nation’s richest pavement sprint car race.
A $120,000-plus purse is posted for Saturday night’s 500-lap USAC
Special event on the 1/4-mile paved oval, featuring a three-abreast, 33-car
starting field.
Fedewa’s four-lap qualifying time of 45.394 seconds paced
first-round qualifying, which determined the first five rows of Saturday’s
lineup. The final 18 starting spots are up for grabs in final qualifying at
Anderson Friday. Saturday night’s 500-lap race starts at 8 pm.
Fedewa is a two-time “Little 500” participant, finishing 17th in
1999 and 20th in 2002. This year’s field includes 16 rookie drivers and
three former winners.
Joining Fedewa on the front row will be 1996 winner Dave Steele of
Tampa, Fla. and 2000 USAC Russell Pro Triple Crown Champ Tim Barber of San
Francisco, Calif. Steele’s qualifying run included Thursday’s fastest
single lap of 11.287 seconds.
Defending six-time race winner Eric Gordon will start ninth
Saturday, while three-time winner Jeff Bloom qualified fourth. Gordon is
seeking a record fifth consecutive victory.
