Cummins Recognized for Commitment To Diversity; Diversity Inc. Names Company Top Employer for Asian Americans
COLUMBUS, Ind.--May 2, 20053, 2005--Cummins Inc. Diversity Inc., a magazine that specializes in covering diversity issues, has named Cummins Inc. as the top company for Asian Americans and one of the Notable Companies for Diversity, Cummins announced today. The Company has long been a leader in its commitment to diversity, which helps create a vibrant and creative work place while giving Cummins an advantage in a competitive global environment.
"We are gratified by this recognition, which shows our commitment to creating a welcoming workplace for employees of all backgrounds," said Cummins Chairman and CEO Tim Solso. "Our experience around the globe, and in China and India in particular, shows that diversity is good for business. And it's the right thing to do."
Diversity Inc. selected the top companies by looking at the percentage of Asian Americans in the total workforce, in management, in the ranks of highest paid employees and among new hires. Cummins, a global company with its headquarters in Columbus, Ind., scored well in all areas.
Cummins' experience shows how diversity is vital to the business. In 2004, Cummins had one of its most profitable years in its history with nearly half of the Company's business generated outside of the United States. Of the $8.4 billion in sales in 2004, 14 percent came from Asia.
The phenomenal growth of China and India has turned them into two of Cummins' biggest markets, underscoring how important it is for the Company to have employees who understand its products and the culture where they're being sold.
Helping to tap those markets are Cummins employees, who have been made to feel welcome by organizations such as the Cummins Chinese and South Asian Affinity Groups.
The three-year-old Chinese Affinity Group, headed by Jean Hou, was formed not only to help recruit and retain Chinese employees, but to enhance business opportunities for the Company and to help communicate across the language and cultural barriers.
Hou, a native of Taiwan, said that in her two decades at Cummins the Chinese community has grown from 10 to 80 families. Hou, Director for International Distribution, has supported many groups of Cummins colleagues when they visit China by providing culture and basic language instruction. She also recently accompanied the Columbus Mayor and Economic Development Board to China to recruit companies to locate in Columbus.
The affinity group has helped forge deeper and stronger ties with the Company's Chinese customers, said John Watkins, Vice President, Cummins - East Asia. Customers from Asia who visit Cummins headquarters in Southern Indiana work directly with Chinese employees, take plant tours conducted in Chinese and deal with staff who understand their culture.
"Customers are reassured because we're able to speak directly to their issues in a relevant way and they're more confident in us and in our products," Watkins said.
Diversity Inc. is a leading publication on diversity issues, surveying companies on recruitment, retention and development of their work forces and asking questions about policies, infrastructure and the diversity of suppliers.
"This is a significant milestone in our diversity journey and reflects the dedication and hard work of many individuals," said Robert Fernandez, Director of Diversity for Cummins, of the magazine's recognition. "Our commitment to diversity is one of the things that sets us apart from our competitors."
