State Officials Demo Measures for Safe Memorial Day Travel
National Share the Road Safety Program Visits Lexington to Save Lives on Kentucky Highways On a typical day as many as 80,000 vehicles travel I-75 through Lexington. Most automobile drivers were never taught what they can do to avoid an accident with a tractor-trailer. Who: Transportation Cabinet Secretary Bill Nighbert, the American Trucking Associations (ATA), AAA Blue Grass/Kentucky, Kentucky Vehicle Enforcement, Kentucky Motor Transport Association, the Lexington Fayette Urban County Police Department, the Kentucky Department of Vehicle Regulation, Kentucky Drive Smart, and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. What: A demonstration of highway safety measures for Memorial Day travel will be conducted for local news media, including "ride-alongs" in tractor-trailers, as part of the national Share the Road safety tour visiting Lexington, KY. When: Tuesday, May 24, 2005, 11:00 AM Where: ABF Freight System, Inc., 1003 Whipple Ct., Lexington, KY (see driving directions below.) Summary: Secretary Nighbert, professional truck drivers with millions of miles of accident-free driving, ATA, AAA Bluegrass/Kentucky, and others, will demonstrate safety measures critical to saving lives on Kentucky highways during the Memorial Day holiday. A static demonstration with simulated highway lanes will show how cars and trucks get into accidents. A professional truck driver will provide truck ride-alongs for news reporters and photographers, providing tips on summer driving, blind spots, driving in construction zones, safe-merging techniques, left lane travel, and stopping and following distances. This safety advice is critical for Kentucky drivers because: * The Memorial Day holiday begins the summer travel season and is one of the most congested periods of highway travel. * Up to 75% of all truck-involved fatalities are unintentionally initiated by car drivers (AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety). * Watching this demonstration will help reduce accidents and save lives. Directions: From Downtown take W. Main St. then go right onto Newtown Pike. Go left onto Nandino Blvd. From I-75 and I-64 take Exit 115. Go south on Newtown Pike/KY 922.
