Rob Bunker - Mid-Ohio race

Rob Bunker likes to pass. He gained 11 positions in two 30-minute Formula
BMW USA races on May 21 and 22, in what is becoming his trademark charge.
Bunker, of Bridgewater, N.J., qualified 14th and 17th for the races at
Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, then quickly moved up to
finish ninth and 11th, respectively.

 

"Having everyone around me and in front of me during a race makes me hustle
that extra bit more," he said. "The results weren't quite what we hoped, but
if you look at the performance we put into it, it's just as good as any
other race. The only thing we really need to work on is qualifying."

 

Bunker enjoyed his first competition on the technical 2.258-mile road
course. "The track was awesome!" he said. "It was a little sketchy on
Thursday when it was cold out and the track was real slick. Then when I
started to get over the bumps sideways, that's when it got fun."

 

He quickly learned to handle the changing track conditions in the No. 18 AIM
Autosport Formula BMW FB2 car.

 

"As far as our setup was concerned, we adapted incredibly well. We went
anywhere from a very cold track to a track that was warm with a lot of
[tire] rubber to a track that was soaking wet to a track that was damp," he
noted. "We had new tires on the left side of the car but not on the right
side of the car because we're only allowed six new tires for the weekend. So
whatever you could throw at the car, we adapted to it."

 

Bunker's next two Formula BMW USA races will be held June 11 and 12, during
the Formula One World Championship race weekend on the Circuit
Gilles-Villeneuve in Montréal.
