NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES - NHRA SOUTH CENTRAL DIVISION

GILLIAM, La. - Red River Raceway opened its gates today for the first
of three days of competition at the inaugural NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing
Series Championships presented by ABC Auto Parts.
This weekend's event marks the first Lucas Oil Drag Racing
Series event for the Gilliam facility and will feature racing in eight
Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series categories as well as competition in the
South Central Division's Sportsman Motorcycle, Sunset Racing Engines Top
Sportsman and TCI Comp Cams Top Dragster series'.
Today, competitors in each category completed their first rounds of
qualifying and time trials. Also getting a shot at the Red River
quarter-mile were the 260-mph Top Alcohol Dragsters and Funny Cars.
Leading the field in Top Alcohol Dragster with a time of 5.676 seconds
at 247.61 mph is Channelview, Texas racer Lee Callaway. Trailing
Callaway and claiming second is James Thompson of Vernon, Texas with a
time of 5.717 seconds at 248.16 mph. In third, with a 6.059 second pass
at 236.26 mph, is Brandon Pierce.
In Top Alcohol Funny Car, a trio of Texans claim the top three
qualifying positions. In the No. 1 spot is Corpus Christi's Steve Burck
with a 6.047 second pass at 238.09 mph. Settling into the No. 2 and 3
positions are Texas runners Jimmy Jones of Cleburne and Burl Brown of
Gainesville.
In other Top Alcohol Funny Car news, former South Central Division
champ, Tate Branch of Artesia, N.M., suffered a fire during the opening
round qualifying behind the wheel of his funny car and as a result was
transported to an area hospital as a precautionary measure.
After today's opening rounds of qualifying in Super Stock and Stock
Eliminator, Texans Michael Hanegan of Victoria and Fred Henson of
Madisonville lead their fields. Doyline, La., racer Billy Pannell is the
No. 1 qualifier in the Sportsman Motorcycle Series, while Bob Fitzhenry
of Tomball, Texas and John Garner of Houston claimed the top spots in
Top Sportsman and Top Dragster series competition.
Saturday's racing action will feature a pair of qualifying attempts for
the 260-mph Top Alcohol Dragsters and Top Alcohol Funny Cars at 2 and 7
p.m., as well as the continuation of qualifying in all other classes
beginning at 9 a.m.
Gates at Red River Raceway open Saturday at 8 a.m. with qualifying set
to begin at 9 a.m. Tickets, including a pit pass, are $20 on Saturday
and Sunday. Children 12 and under are admitted free each day with a paid
adult.
