Vanguard CEO Ronn Bailey to Compete in Morocco Rally as Prelude to 2006 Dakar Off-Road Rally
- Sole American Car Driver to Compete in 2100km Moroccan Race Spanning Five Days of Desert Sands without GPS Equipment -
LAS VEGAS, May 20 -- With vivid memories of blinding sandstorms, and empty fuel tanks forcing an early disqualification in a race that half the entries finish, Vanguard CEO Ronn Bailey today announced he will compete in the 2006 Dakar Road Race - the world's longest and most grueling motor competition.
As a prelude to the 2006 Dakar event, which will run from Lisbon, Portugal through western Africa, Bailey will be the sole U.S. entry in the 2,100 km 6th Morocco Rally starting on May 24 and ending May 29.
Bailey, an amateur driver, is a last minute entry (#235) in the Morocco Rally. His co-driver is Denis Schurger, an experienced road race veteran who has coached Chinese drivers racing in the 2003, 2004 and 2005 Dakar races.
Bailey and Schurger will be racing in a car owned by SMG, a French-made two-wheel drive buggy with a Chevy V8 5.7 in rear mid-ship position with sequential longitudinal 4-speed transmission. Its owner, manager and top driver Philippe Gache drove the brand new car in the recent 2005 Dakar Rally and finished 7th in the April 2005 Tunisia Rally. Philippe will serve as Team Vanguard Manager in the Morocco Rally.
The race course of the five-day sand swept road rally, forms a long oval along the Atlantic coast of Morocco coast from Agadir through Oued Chebika to Laayoune and back to Agadir -- all southwest of the famous cities Casablanca and Marrakesh. This year, the race will prohibit Global Positioning Systems (GPS) on five navigational stages, returning to the origins of cross-country rally.
"Although Rallye Moroc is not as long it covers some of the most difficult and rugged terrain in any off road race," Bailey explains. "Navigating in deserts and sandstorms without any GPS will be especially challenging, but my co-driver and Team Vanguard look forward to overcoming the inevitable obstacles that arise during these grueling events.
This year, Bailey will be the only American driver or team in the Morocco Rally. He also fielded the only American car team in the 2005 Dakar, although NASCAR veteran Robby Gordon raced as part of the Volkswagen Touareg Team.
