Toyota Develops High-pressure Hydrogen Tanks for Fuel Cell Vehicles

Tokyo May 16, 2005; Aki Tsukioka writing for JCNN reported that Toyota Motor announced on May 16 that it has developed 35 MPa and 70 MPa high-pressure hydrogen tanks for use in fuel cell vehicles. Both tanks have been certified by the High Pressure Gas Safety Institute of Japan.

The use of a nylon resin tank liner provides the tank with superior hydrogen permeation-prevention performance and allows the liner to be thinner. The 35 MPa tank can hold 10% more hydrogen than the 35 MPa tank Toyota used before. The 70 MPa tank can store approximately 1.7 times more hydrogen than the previous 35 MPa tank.

Technical details of the tanks will be disclosed at the 2005 JSAE Annual Congress (Spring) to be held at the Pacifico Yokohama complex from May 18.
