NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES - WEST CENTRAL DIVISION
S.R.C.A. DRAGSTRIP
MAY 15, 2005
MEYER REPEATS, STIDHAM PICKS UP NEEDED WIN
GREAT BEND, Kan. - Randy Meyer pulled off a clean sweep in Top
Alcohol Dragster at this weekend's Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at
S.R.C.A. Dragstrip. The defending NHRA West Central Division Champion
qualified No. 1, set track records in elapsed time and mph, and took
home the win by defeating David Wells in the final round.
"This is a great win and a great way to start off the year,"
voiced Meyer. "We were able to make the power this weekend and the track
held it."
The Spring Hill, Kan., racer ran a 5.502 second pass at 248.48
mph in the final against Wells who recorded a 5.550 second run at 254.04
mph. Meyer ran a 5.375 second lap in round one for the track elapsed
time record and came back in the semifinals to set the mph record at
259.11 mph.
Joining Meyer in the winner's circle from the Top Alcohol Funny
Car class was Jackie Stidham of Chickasha, Okla., as he knocked out
former division champion Kirk Williams with a pass of 6.006 seconds at
239.87 mph
"We've started off the year a little slow so this is a big win
for us," Stidham expressed. "We won here two years ago and we use to
race against R.C. (R.C. Williams, S.R.C.A. Track Operator) way back when
so we had to come back."
Adding to the Kansas list of winners were Duane Hawkes of
Wichita, Kan., in Super Comp and Gary Stinnett of Emporia, Kan. Hawkes
beat out Jeff Cheney in the final of Super Comp while Stinnett, who also
builds Hawkes' racing motors, won in Super Stock over Chad Guilford.
Stinnett's 9.541 second, 137.01 mph pass was enough to track down
Guilford who had a perfect 0.000 second reaction time. This was the
first NHRA divisional event win for Hawkes.
In Comp Eliminator, Clint Sallee took out Michael Johnson with a
run of 6.877 seconds, 198.93 to Johnson's 8.944, 149.03. Dan Zrust out
of Maple Grove, Minn., won the Stock Eliminator division while Michael
Miller of Santa Fe, N.M., won in Super Gas.
Rounding out this weekend's winners were Rick Bowman in Super
Street and Dale Detlie in Motorcycle. Bowman's '60 Corvette has a 15-0
run going in NHRA round wins dating back to last year when his son Jared
won Super Gas in the car at the Lucas Oil Event at Tri-State Raceway in
Earlville, Iowa. Detlie beat out Tom Gilligan of Fremont, Neb., with a
run of 8.795 seconds at 146.67 mph.
The West Central Division racers head to Heartland Park Topeka in two
weeks for the NHRA PowerAde Drag Racing Series then up to Brainerd
International Raceway the following week for the next West Central
Division Lucas Oil Drag racing Series event, June 3-5.
