NHRA RETURNS TO GREAT BEND FOR WEST CENTRAL OPENER

	GREAT BEND, Kan. - The NHRA West Central Division kicked off its
2005 season today with qualifying at S.R.C.A. Dragstrip in Great Bend,
Kan. with Clint Sallee leading the way in Comp Eliminator with a pass of
6.870 seconds in his '04 dragster. The Montana racer is followed by
Robert Baldwin of Strausburg, Colo., and Daniel Mikel of Hempstead,
Texas, in the second and third spots respectively.
	James Weakland qualified in the No. 1 spot in Super Stock with a
run of 9.891 seconds in his '68 Camaro, 1.199 seconds under the index.
The Colorado racer is followed by Carroll Warling and Darren Wall, also
of Colorado, in the second and third qualifying positions. 
	In Stock Eliminator it was Robert Shaw grabbing the top spot
with a run of 13.964 seconds, 1.526 under his index. Keith Lynch, who
picked up a win last month in Tucson, Ariz., is second out of West
Jaodan, Utah, while local racer Bradley Grant of Great Bend, Kan. is
twenty-sixth in the forty-three car field.
The Top Alcohol Dragsters and Funny Cars will have their first shot at
the famed quarter mile on Saturday with qualifying sessions scheduled
for 1:30, 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. Defending Top Alcohol Funny Car National
Champion Cy Chesterman and West Central Division Dragster Champion Randy
Meyer make their return to Great Bend where they each took home wins
last year's on their way to their championship seasons.
Meyer of Spring Hill, Kan., is currently fourth in national points and
is coming off a win earlier this month at Texas Motorplex in Dallas,
Texas.
	Racing continues Saturday at 9a.m.  Gates open at 7 a.m.
