Champion Sparks Renault's Fourth Straight Formula One Grand Prix Race Win, 101st Overall
SOUTHFIELD, Mich.--May 2, 2005--Champion(R) spark plugs have helped power four consecutive 2005 Formula One Grand Prix wins in 2005, including the 100th and 101st F-1 victory overall for the Renault team. Champion, the "Performance Driven" brand of spark plugs, is manufactured by Federal-Mogul Corporation (OTCBB:FDMLQ), and is the first choice of leading drivers in F-1, NASCAR Nextel Cup and the NHRA.Spaniard Fernando Alonso, driving a Renault R25, captured his third F-1 victory of the season - and the 101st overall for a Champion-powered Renault team - in the Republic of San Marino April 24-25. Alonso's wins (he also took the checkered flags at Sakhir, Bahrain, and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) give the Renault team a perfect four-for-four record, as teammate Giancarlo Fisichella opened the '05 campaign with a win in Melbourne, Australia. Alonso holds an 18-point lead over Jarno Trulli in the F-1 world championship chase, with Fisichella in third place overall. Fifteen races remain in the 2005 season.
Renault has relied exclusively on Champion spark plugs since the late 1970s, with a majority of the team's plugs manufactured in the Champion brand's Toledo, Ohio, facility. Renault also has supplied Champion-powered engines to Lotus, Williams and Bennetton F-1 teams, while Champion has helped drivers Michael Schumacher, Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve win F-1 world championships.
"The Champion motorsports and engineering teams congratulate Renault and its drivers on a true racing milestone with more than 100 F-1 wins, and their early success in the 2005 season," said Champion Motorsports Director John Glover. "It's especially heartening to see our legendary brand successful in virtually every major racing series, from NASCAR and NHRA competition to the grueling challenge of Formula One. We're hoping to add to our roster of series championships in 2005."
