FIELDS SET, ELIMINATIONS TO BEGIN SUNDAY AT TEXAS MOTORPLEX LUCAS OIL EVENT
ENNIS, Texas - In the final rounds of qualifying at the Texas
Motorplex's NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Randy Meyer and Tate Branch
retained their No. 1 qualifying positions in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top
Alcohol Funny Car, respectively.
Meyer, who is from Spring Hill, Kan., ran 5.298 seconds at 260.41 mph to set
the pace. That pass was an improvement over Friday's effort. Aaron
Olivarez of Sandy, Utah, jumped from seventh place after Friday's qualifying
to second place today with a 5.301-second, 266.42 mph effort.
Artesia, N.M., racer Branch also stepped up his numbers on Saturday, running
5.619 seconds at 256.26 mph. Richard McClain of Lake Dallas, Texas, stayed
in the second spot although he, too, improved on his previous numbers.
In Comp Eliminator Raymond Martin of Mt. Belvieu, Texas, took
over the No. 1 spot as did Gilbert Johnson Jr., of La Compte, La., in Super
Stock. Stock Eliminator racer Fred Henson of Madisonville, Texas, kept his
top qualifying spot along with Top Sportsman racer Keith Raferty of Lake
Charles, La.; Houston's Mike McCullah in Sportsman Motorcycle; and Jack
Heslink of Sasche, Texas, in Top Dragster.
Racing continues Sunday at Texas Motorplex. Gates open at 8 a.m. and
eliminations start at 9 a.m. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car
run first round of eliminations at noon. Tickets, including pit pass, are
$20. Children 6 to 12 are $10 and kids 5 and under are admitted free.
