SPEED WORLD CHALLENGE MAKES COMPETITION ADJUSTMENTS PRIOR TO MID-OHIO

TOPEKA, Kan. (April 28, 2005) – SCCA Pro Racing announced today minor competition adjustments in the SCCA SPEED World Challenge GT and Touring Car classes.

Heading the list is a 100lb base weight reduction (3300 to 3200) to the Dodge Viper (Competition Coupe) in SPEED GT. Additionally, the SPEED Touring Car BMW 325i/325Ci received a five percent air restriction break from 30 percent to 25 percent.

“After our substantial review of data from the first three races, we expect that this adjustment will create the parity necessary for teams to race head to head for the Championship over the final eight races,” SCCA Pro Racing Senior Technical Director Harry Turner said.

“The adjustment to the Viper will put it in line with the rest of the front-running cars over the course of the entire race, where tire management comes into play,” Turner added. “The change to the BMW 325 will provide a slight increase in top-end power, allowing it to better race with the other front-running Touring Cars on circuits with higher top speeds.”

The technical staff reviews all available data from front-running cars, including detailed lap information from segments around the track including, but not limited to: wheel speed, engine speed, throttle position, gear selection, lateral and longitudinal g forces, brake and steering input. Coupled with video review and other data collected, such as segment times, radar speeds on straightaways and in corners, lap times and car design—including computer engine modeling and aerodynamic studies, each car’s specifications are determined.

The next race on the 2005 SCCA SPEED World Challenge schedule is May 20-22 for the SPEED World Challenge Weekend Presented by Trenton Forging Quality Solutions at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
