INITIAL ROUNDS OF QUALIFYING IN AT TEXAS MOTORPLEX NHRA LUCAS OIL EVENT
ENNIS, Texas - In the first rounds of qualifying in the NHRA
Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Texas Motorplex, there is a defending
division champion and a former division champ leading their respective
fields in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car.
Randy Meyer of Spring Hill, Kan., is the reigning Top Alcohol Dragster
champion in NHRA's West Central division. He has set the pace in the first
day of qualifying with a 5.411-second, 255.73 mph run. The next closest
competitor is Vernon, Texas' James Thompson who ran 5.506 seconds at 267.75
mph. Ashley Force, the South Central division's defending champion in the
class, is currently qualified fifth.
Artesia, N.M., Top Alcohol Funny Car racer Tate Branch is in the No. 1 spot
after Friday's qualifying effort. He ran 5.829 seconds at 252.76 mph to
take the pole. Richard McClain of Lake Dallas, Texas, is in the No. 2 spot
after running 5.857 seconds at 246.89 mph. At the division's first Lucas
Oil race, in Baytown, Texas, last month, Branch beat McClain in the final
round of eliminations but McClain had been the top qualifier.
Top qualifiers in other classes were Greg Porter, Edmond, Okla., in Comp
Eliminator; Tony Cowell, Weatherford, Texas, in Super Stock; Fred Henson,
Madisonville, Texas, in Stock Eliminator; Keith Raftery, Lake Charles, La.,
in Top Sportsman; Mike McCullah, Houston, in Sportsman Motorcycle; and Jack
Heslink, Sasche, Texas, in Top Dragster.
Racing continues Saturday and Sunday at Texas Motorplex. Gates
open at 8 a.m. both days and qualifying continues Saturday at 9 a.m.
Eliminations start Sunday at 9 a.m. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol
Funny Car will have two qualifying passes Saturday at 1 and 4 p.m. They run
first round of eliminations at noon Sunday.
Tickets, including pit pass, are $15 Saturday and $20 Sunday. Children 6 to
15 are $10 each day and kids 5 and under are admitted free.
