Smith Wins at SSP on Thursday




NEWBERRYTOWN, PA (April 28, 2004) – Mark Smith from Tower City picked up his  
first  Susquehanna Speedway Park win  of the season on Thursday evening.  In 
other action, Mike Goodwin won the Xtreme Stock Car feature, Kurt  Welsh won 
in Classic Cars action and Ken Johns was victorious in the One-on-One  Street 
Car Drags. 
Smith’s win in the 25-lap Sprint Car feature was his  second career SSP win, 
and first of the season.  Smith took over the top spot on  15th lap when race 
lonbg leader Fred Rahmer suffered a flat  tire.  Rahmer, who started second  
outgunned polesitter Erin Crocker at the start and held sway until his  
misfortune.  Once in front, Smith  was able to keep a slim margin over Jeff Shepard 
to the  finish. 
Last week’s winner Greg Hodnett finished third with  Blane Heimbach and 
opening night winner Jason Johnson in the top five.  Lance Dewease finished sixth 
with Rahmer  charging back for seventh.  Kevin  Nouse, Eric Stambaugh and Josh 
Wells completed the top ten.  Heats went to Smith, Nouse and Heimbach,  with 
Brent Kluge taking the consy. 
Goodwin won a wild four car battle to claim the 20  lap Xtreme Stock event.  
At the  finish Goodwin, who started 12th, just edged last week’s winner David  
Wilhelm, who had charged to the front from the 34th starting  spot.  Gene 
Knaub and Charlie  Pensinger were third and fourth, and crashed just past the 
finish line.  Matt Wampler completed the top  five.  Smoke Christine and Bryon  
sipe had exchanged the lead several times early in the race before both 
suffered  mechanical problems.  Heats went to  Christine and Knaub, with Wilhelm 
winning the dash.  
Welsh led all 20 laps of the Northeast Classic car  feature, but hed to fend 
off his father in law Bill Brown Sr. at the  finish.  Jamie Lloyd, Joe 
Crocker,  and Fred Cullum completed the top five.  Heats went to Brown and Welsh. 
Johns, driving a 1985 Pontiac station wagon outgunned  the Mustang of butch 
Richcreek Jr. in the final race to claim the $250  One-on-One Street Drags. 
The next race at SSP will be Thursday night, May 5  with Mother’s 
Appreciation Night featuring the Sprint Cars, Xtreme Stock Cars,  Legends Cars and the 
first appearance of the W.O.W. (Women on Wheels).  Gates open in the pit area 
and  grandstands at 5:00 p.m.  Warmups begin at 7:00 p.m. with racing beginning 
promptly at 7:30  p.m.  SSP will continue its Repeat Fan Discount in which  
there will be a $2.00 discount for each person with a ticket stub from the April 
 28 event only.  For example, $2.00  off an Adult ticket for May 5 with and 
Adult ticket stub from the April 28  event.  Returning fans are  encouraged to 
write their name, address and phone number on the back of the stub  to be 
entered into special drawings to be held during the season for great  prizes.  
Last season, the grand  prize was two tickets to the NASCAR race in October at 
the Lowe’s Motor Speedway  in Charlotte, North Carolina.  Pit  pass prices are 
$20.00 with a reduced price of $18.00 for all track license  holders.
