Emptoris Congratulates GM -- 2005 Edelman Prize Winner
Premiere vendor of optimization bid analysis passes torch to this year's winner
BURLINGTON, Mass., April 27 -- Emptoris, the leading provider of Enterprise Supply Management solutions for Global 5000 companies, congratulates General Motors, this year's Edelman Prize winner. GM won for its entry entitled, "Increasing Production Throughput at General Motors." Using operations research to achieve one of its signature benefits -- greater efficiency -- GM has saved over $2 billion through improved productivity at 30 assembly plants in 10 countries. Avner Schneur, Emptoris CEO, said, "The savings achieved by General Motors is a testament to how operations research and management science can deliver significant business impact. We congratulate General Motors, and like them, we remain committed to bringing the power of optimization to deliver bottom line financial savings."
Last year, Emptoris collaborated with Motorola to win the award for its entry titled, "Reinventing the Supplier Negotiation Process at Motorola." Motorola's entry focused on the need to drastically reduce costs and increase productivity, with the priority to reduce the cost of direct and indirect materials purchased. Working with Emptoris, and combining OR-aided methods such as innovative bidding, online negotiations and scenario-based optimization analysis, Motorola launched a comprehensive system to support the company's sourcing process. As a result of the new system, Motorola's savings have exceeded $600 million.
As an innovator in the development of optimization-based bid analysis, Emptoris delivered the first commercial software application designed for the procurement organization. As the undisputed leader and only winner of the Edelman Prize for applying optimization to the supplier negotiation process, Emptoris today supports the widest and deepest enterprise software implementations globally. In the intervening year since it won the Edelman Prize, Emptoris has continued to work closely with its customers to deliver new innovations and extend the power of optimization for even larger impact.
Emptoris offers optimization embedded into a self-service software suite. This meets the needs for plug-and-play optimization-based bid analysis to support supplier negotiations for all categories of goods and services. "Unlike boutique optimization vendors that focus only on high complexity sourcing projects that require technical expertise to ensure the analytical model works, Emptoris' solution works out of the box and can be applied to all categories of spend," said Joe Jouhal, SVP of Sales and Marketing at Emptoris. "Using Emptoris, procurement professionals can focus on solving their business problems without relying on technical consulting assistance." By making optimization available to non-technical procurement professionals, Emptoris enables broader use across the enterprise. This leads to faster, deeper and wider adoption of optimization technology, which delivers greater bottom line savings impact.
The Franz Edelman Award for Achievement in Operations Research and the Management Sciences is the culmination of a rigorous competition that recognizes innovation, is sought after by operations researchers and planners around the world and is presented annually by the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS(R)).
