On the Eve of Earth Day, Caltrans Launches ''Don't Trash California'' Campaign
--California Department of TransportationWHAT: Statewide launch of the "Don't Trash California" public education campaign, a 22-month, $6.5 million effort to reduce the amount of pollutants (especially litter) that enter the highway storm drains. WHEN: Thursday, April 21, 2005 10 a.m. WHERE: State Capitol Building -- West steps Sacramento, 95814 WHO: Caltrans Director Will Kempton Assemblyman Paul Koretz, 42nd Assembly District California Highway Patrol WHY: Litter on the highways and freeways can find its way into storm drains and pollute waterways and the environment. Water flowing through storm drains laden with litter can empty into streams and creeks, and ultimately affect recreational areas such as lakes, rivers and the ocean. VISUALS: On display will be sculptures created from trash found along California's freeways and highways commissioned by Caltrans for a statewide tour.
