On the Eve of Earth Day, Caltrans Launches ''Don't Trash California'' Campaign

--California Department of Transportation

WHAT: Statewide launch of the "Don't Trash California"
                public education campaign, a 22-month, $6.5 million
effort to reduce the amount of pollutants (especially
litter) that enter the highway storm drains.

    WHEN: Thursday, April 21, 2005
                10 a.m.

WHERE: State Capitol Building -- West steps
                Sacramento, 95814

    WHO: Caltrans Director Will Kempton
Assemblyman Paul Koretz, 42nd Assembly District
                California Highway Patrol

WHY: Litter on the highways and freeways can find its way
into storm drains and pollute waterways and the
environment. Water flowing through storm drains laden
with litter can empty into streams and creeks, and
ultimately affect recreational areas such as lakes,
                rivers and the ocean.

VISUALS: On display will be sculptures created from trash found
along California's freeways and highways commissioned
by Caltrans for a statewide tour.
