Solar Car

In commemoration of Earth Day 2005, Motorola, Inc. invites Chicago-area media to an exclusive showing of Momentum, a solar car designed and raced by engineering students at the University of Michigan (UM). Momentum will compete in this summer's 2,450-mile North American Solar Challenge race from Texas to Canada.

The UM car weighs 700 lbs, is 5.9 feet wide, 16.4 feet long and only 3.6 feet high. It is powered by more than 3000 solar cells. It can go as fast as 80 mph using the same amount of power as a hair dryer with a fuel equivalency of 1600 mpg.

More than 40 solar cars will compete in the 2005 North American Solar Challenge that starts July 17 in Austin, Tex., and ends 10 days later in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

As a Fortune 100 global communications leaders that provides seamless mobility products and solutions, Motorola is providing the mission critical communications technology that will allow University of Michigan crew members to seamlessly communicate throughout the 2,450 trek across the United States. Voice and data technology includes two-way radio, cellular, and broadband communications.

On Thursday, April 21, 2005, from 1:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. members of the media are invited to this one-day exclusive showing of Momentum. The solar car and several of its team support vehicles are in Schaumburg for the installation of communications equipment. Media will be able to talk with solar team drivers, student designers and engineers, Motorola engineers who have designed the racing communications systems, and view and photograph this unique sleekly designed vehicle of the future, as well as the equipment installation. Please come to Door 4 on the Motorola Schaumburg Campus.
