INDIANAPOLIS - The NHRA North Central division's season opening
Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event is in the books. Todd Datweiler took the
win in Top Alcohol Dragster and Danny Townsend carried his No. 1 qualifying
effort in Top Alcohol Funny Car through to the winner's circle.
Indianapolis's Glen Julius also scored a win in Top Sportsman.
Datweiler, of Herscher, Ill., ran 5.729 seconds at 251.91 mph in the final
which was enough to beat Dave Hirata of Lowell, Ind., who ran 5.901 seconds
at 244.92 mph. Datweiler qualified in the sixth spot and was able to get
around defending division champion Bill Reichert of Owosso, Mich., in the
semis.
Muncie, Ind., racer Townsend was the top qualifier of this event and ran
5.746 seconds at 253.66 mph in the final to beat Jeff Burnett of Brownsburg,
Ind., who made a 6.154-second, 224.85 mph pass. Townsend beat former
division champion Chuck Cheeseman of Galena, Ohio, in the semifinals. In
the first round of eliminations, Burnett took out the defending division
champion, Mick Snyder of Demotte, Ind.
Joining Datwieler, Townsend and Julius in the winner's circle were Brad
Zazkowski, Grand Rapids, Mich., in Comp Eliminator; Grant Singer, Regina,
Sask., in Super Stock; Jamie Fenner, Zionsville, Ohio, in Stock Eliminator;
Rock Haas, White Lake, Mich., in Super Comp; Ron Erks, Clinton, Ohio, in
Super Gas; and Tim Gary, Reynoldsburg, Ohio, in Super Street.
North Central Division racers head to Mid-Michigan Motorplex in
Stanton, Mich., for the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, July
1-3.
