RACERS PACK NORTH CENTRAL DIVISION'S LUCAS OIL  OPENER AT IRP

            INDIANAPOLIS - Qualifying and time trials at the NHRA Lucas Oil
Drag Racing Series event at Indianapolis Raceway Park featured more than 670
cars, including 21 Top Alcohol Dragsters and 17 Top Alcohol Funny Cars vying
for eight qualifying spots in each category.  In the end, Top Alcohol
Dragster driver Ken Perry maintained his No.1 position and Danny Townsend
overtook the Top Alcohol Funny Car lead.

Perry, of Gormley, Ont., did not improve on his qualifying time from Friday
but the 5.356-second, 263.87 mph effort was enough to stave off the
competition.  Defending division champion Bill Reichert of Owosso, Mich.,
remained in the No. 2 qualifying spot and Dan Mercier of St. Timothee, Que.,
was third.

Danny Townsend, Muncie, Ind., leaped to No. 1 from No. 5 with a
5.708-second, 253.99 mph run.  Demotte, Ind., racer Mick Snyder, who was No.
1 after Friday's qualifying session, dropped to third place.

            In other qualifying classes this weekend, all of Friday's best
qualifiers stayed on top.  In Comp Eliminator, Rod Dorsey, North Judson,
Ind., bested the field while Super Stock competitor Ron Terrell of Hebron,
Ky., was No. 1.  In Stock Eliminator, Don Holmes, Dayton, Ohio, retained his
No. 1 spot at did Top Sportsman racer Tom Stultz of Terre Haute, Ind.

Eliminations start Sunday at 8 a.m.  Gates open at 7 a.m.  Top Alcohol
Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will run first round of eliminations at
noon.  Tickets are $15 and children 12 and under are admitted free with a
