SNYDER, PERRY ARE EARLY LEADERS AT IRP'S LUCAS OIL EVENT
INDIANAPOLIS - In the first rounds of qualifying at the NHRA
Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Indianapolis Raceway Park (IRP), Mick
Snyder is leading the Top Alcohol Funny Car pack and Ken Perry is the
frontrunner in Top Alcohol Dragster. The three-day race kicked off Friday
with qualifying and time trials which will continue on Saturday. Sunday's
action will feature eliminations in nine classes.
Snyder, a Demotte, Ind., resident and defending NHRA North Central division
Funny Car champion, made a 5.770-second, 249.07 mph pass to give him the No.
1 position. The 23-year-old racer started the 2004 season with a win here.
In the No. 2 qualifying spot is Brownsburg resident Jeff Bernett with a
5.877-second, 237.71 mph run. He is just ahead of Indianapolis's Todd Veney
whose 5.877-second, 237.71 mph effort put him in third place.
Top Alcohol Dragster pilot Perry of Gormley, Ont., ran 5.356 seconds at
263.87 mph to earn the top spot. He is nearly two-tenths of a second ahead
of the No. 2 qualifier Bill Reichert of Owosso, Mich. Reichert, the
reigning division champion, ran 5.508 seconds at 261.32 mph. Reichert was
runner-up here a year ago.
Top qualifiers in other classes were Rod Dorsey, North Judson, Ind., in Comp
Eliminator; Ron Terrell, Hebron, Ky., in Super Stock; Donald Holmes, Dayton,
Ohio, in Stock Eliminator; and Tom Stultz, Terre Haute, Ind., in Top
Sportsman.
Qualifying and time trials continue Saturday at IRP and
eliminations start Sunday. Gates open at 7 a.m. both days and racing starts
at 8 a.m. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car are scheduled to
have two qualifying runs on Saturday, at 1 and 4:30 p.m. They will run
first round of eliminations at noon on Sunday.
Tickets are $15 each day. Children 12 and under are admitted free with a
