FEV Refines New Quiet Diesel Powerplant
AUBURN HILLS, Mich., April 13 -- FEV played a key role in the development of a "quiet" six-cylinder diesel engine that soon will be available on the Jaguar S-Type sedan.
The engine, refined and validated by FEV, will be displayed at the company's exhibit during the 2005 SAE World Congress, April 11-14, at Cobo Center in Detroit.
The V-6 diesel engine meets Euro-IV emissions requirements and ranks well above the best-in-class benchmark for noise, vibration and harshness (NVH). Common-rail diesel technology contributes to low noise levels, smooth performance and modest fuel consumption.
During development of the engine, FEV performed continuous CAE analysis for design assessment and dynamic structure optimization. NVH testing centered on noise-source identification and fine-tuning, as well as the resulting validation.
FEV is an industry leader in the use of computer-aided engineering (CAE) and testing to develop best-in-class powertrains with improved NVH characteristics, reducing radiated noise as well as minimizing structure-borne noise.
Actively engaged in the benchmarking of competitive powertrains and offering total NVH system assessment for both powertrains and vehicles, much of FEV's work is completed using analytical techniques, sometimes with virtual pre-production models. Once prototypes are available, the company's engineers can make noise and vibration refinements through appropriate testing.
FEV was involved in the NVH and combustion-system phases of the engine's development, starting with the initial design stages and continuing through to the start of production in the joint Ford/PSA-Peugeot Citroen project. The final engine design includes a large number of the NVH and combustion system changes recommended by FEV.
FEV is an independent engine and powertrain systems research, design and development company. Globally, it provides complete concept-to-production (C2P)(TM) support to the transportation industry, commercial engine manufacturers and the emerging fuel-cell industry. FEV designs, prototypes and develops advanced gasoline-, diesel- and alternative-fueled engines, along with advanced vehicle powertrain concepts, including hybrid-electric vehicles. FEV also is a global supplier of advanced test cell, instrumentation and test equipment.
