Henkel's New Loctite(R) 5810 Polyacrylate Sealant Delivers High Value, Low Costs, Environmental Benefits

DETROIT, April 11 -- Henkel today introduced its new Loctite 5810 Polyacrylate Sealant, which combines the benefits of liquid silicone and anaerobic gaskets for a 56 percent improved permeation resistance over traditional sealants. The unique properties of the sealant help OEMs and suppliers cut costs, improve reliability and meet governmental regulations. Loctite 5810 Polyacrylate Sealant also improves permeation resistance to oil/fuel vapors to meet increasingly stringent environmental regulations for vehicles.

The new sealant delivers one complete solution to a number of complex powertrain challenges by providing a more durable seal for automotive engine, transmission and driveline applications at up to 95 percent lower material cost than conventional molded gaskets.

"As the market leader of liquid sealants, Henkel set out to develop the most effective liquid gasket solution to meet the widest range of needs," said Mark Neuenschwander, new business development and marketing manager - Gasketing Products, Henkel. "Our customers told us their 'ideal gasketing solution,' would combine all the advantages of silicone and anaerobic products -- this was our motivation behind Loctite 5810 Polyacrylate Sealant."

Henkel's research and development group in Rocky Hill, Conn., developed the new product with significant input from OEMs and suppliers. The result of this collaboration is a sealant that delivers excellent manufacturing flexibility, good resistance to powertrain fluids and ensures a strong seal. The unusual chemical properties of Loctite 5810 Polyacrylate Sealant provide long open time, allowing up to 60 minutes between assembly steps, which helps eliminate scrap during manufacturing. Even with all this flexibility, the sealant still delivers a robust, pressure-resistant seal. Loctite 5810 also has excellent adhesion and permeation resistance, which provides an outstanding seal, regardless of the application.

The superior oil resistance of Loctite 5810 is enhanced since the sealant has no silicone plasticizers, which can cause a chemical reaction with engine and transmission oil leading to foaming and potential mechanical damage. In the transmission, this foaming condition can cause hard shifting between gears and unacceptable operating noise.

"Loctite 5810 Polyacrylate Sealant does it all, from helping protect powertrains to reducing environmental impact from vehicles," said Neuenschwander. "It's a great example of what can be accomplished by leveraging the power of Henkel's brands and industry knowledge."
