Hamilton's Ram Wins Pole at Martinsville
April 8, 2005
Martinsville Speedway
Kroger 250 Qualifying.
BOBBY HAMILTON (No. 04 Bailey's Dodge Ram) - Wins Pole
"It's a very close racetrack. The least situation, the wiggle of the
steering wheel or slip of the tires can cost you dearly here. We had no
intentions of sitting on the pole. I can promise you that. Everybody
works on race run stuff. You just slap some tape on it and put Goodyear
Wranglers on it and push it to the mat and hope it sticks. It stuck.
"We couldn't run Timothy (Peters) the first three races because of the
mile and a half situations and he's a rookie. We split the races so
Timothy could have more time, but I don't think it's going to take very
long. He had a very good practice today. It was his first qualifying
with radial tires (will start 25th). I'm pretty excited about it.
There's nothing to the public eye about him now, but I've had a lot of
tests with him and he's a very eager individual. It should be a good
deal for BHR and Bailey's.
"We just try to do what we need to do. At Daytona, I pretty much knew
from practice I could do that (win). I knew from running two laps. I
said, 'OK, we've got a rocket ship. They're in trouble if we don't get
into a wreck. Second place at California, we got two laps down and
almost killed the motor because we were running hot. We came back and
finished second. Third place at Atlanta, we cut a right rear down, went
two laps down and came back and finished third. I have no idea how it
happens. I just know I've got good equipment right now and I know it's
the truck series but a lot of good racecar drivers right now are trying
to push a rope instead of pulling it. It takes very good equipment to
run fast in any series, and I'm just fortunate enough to be the owner
that realizes that and applies the sources to make sure that the teams
have good trucks.
"One thing I've learned about this business. You don't ever talk about
the past. You just talk about the future, so we're on the pole here. I'm
pretty happy with that."
