Bosch Steering Assist Makes Worldwide Debut on Mercedes-Benz A, B-Class
FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich., March 29 -- Bosch announces the introduction of its new steering assist program on the Mercedes-Benz A- and B- Class vehicles. The program, jointly developed with DaimlerChrysler, supports the driver in critical driving situations by enhancing or redirecting power steering support.
The steering assist program works by combining the functions of existing electronics such as electronic stability control (ESC) and electronic power steering. The new steering assist function supplements the stabilizing effect of ESC and counteracts skidding at a very early stage. Steering assist evaluates ESC sensor data, identifying critical situations and determining a correct steering lock. If actual steering conflicts with calculated values, the power steering will introduce a corrective steering moment, allowing the driver to intuitively adjust the steering angle to the correct value. This results in quicker and more accurate steering, ultimately keeping the vehicle safely on the road.
Drivers can be slow in counter steering when the vehicle's rear-end breaks out. Steering assist supports the driver in relieving the critical situation through correct steering maneuvers. The function also is beneficial in emergency braking and helps the driver maintain control when one side of the car is on a slippery surface and the other is on a dry surface.
The system is designed to support but never dictate to the driver. The driver may override the systems' intentions at any time. Most of the drivers who have already test driven the system arrived at the same conclusion -- critical situations can be controlled more efficiently and safely with activated steering assist. Steering assist enhances the stabilizing effect of ESC and road safety is improved.
