Toyota Announces Top Supplier Awards for 2004
AK Steel, NOVA Chemicals and U.S. Engine Valve Recognized for Excellence in Both Quality and Delivery
ERLANGER, Ky., March 23 -- Toyota Motor Manufacturing North America, Inc. (TMMNA) today announced awards for its top North American suppliers in 2004. Among the awards given out at the ceremony, AK Steel Corporation of Middletown, Ohio, NOVA Chemicals of Pittsburgh, Pa. and U.S. Engine Valve Company of Westminster, S.C. were each recognized with Superior Awards in the areas of both Quality and Delivery.
(see chart below for a complete list of Superior and Excellent Award Winners)
The awards acknowledge those suppliers who have met Toyota's highest standards in quality, delivery and value improvement for parts and materials. Additionally, special recognition awards were given to those suppliers whose exemplary work over the past several years greatly contributed to the launch of the all-new 2005 Toyota Tacoma.
Toyota also presented Superior and Excellent awards in the area of Supplier Diversity. These awards, which were introduced last year, recognize those suppliers who put forth outstanding efforts on minority business development initiatives and are helping Toyota to meet their minority procurement targets. Several years ago, TMMNA announced a target of 7.5% annual minority Tier I purchases by the end of this year. When TMMNA's Tier 2 requirements of its suppliers are added to this goal, minority business spending will exceed $1 billion.
"As Toyota continues to grow in North America, our suppliers are challenged to meet Toyota's high standards on an even greater scale," said Osamu "Simon" Nagata, vice president of purchasing for TMMNA, located in Erlanger, Kentucky. "Toyota's success here is directly linked to the success of our suppliers."
The awards were given at Toyota's Annual Business Meeting and Awards Ceremony, which brings together the automaker's approximately 500 North American suppliers to share expectations for the coming business year and to recognize outstanding performance among suppliers.
Toyota currently has five vehicle manufacturing plants and six engine/component plants in North America. In addition, two new plants are under construction -- in San Antonio, Texas and Jackson, Tennessee -- and several of Toyota's North American engine and component plants are expanding.
By 2006, Toyota will have the capacity to build 1.66 million cars and trucks a year and 1.44 million engines in North America. Toyota currently employs over 37,000 people throughout North America. The company's direct investment is over $16.7 billion with annual parts, materials, goods and services purchased from North American suppliers totaling over $25 billion. Toyota's North American-produced vehicles include the Avalon, Camry, Corolla, Matrix, Sienna, Solara, Sequoia, Tacoma, Tundra, and the Lexus RX 330.
