Race Ramblings March 21, 2005 From Wayne Cloth
Hey there!
Busy, busy weekend in the world of racing! Was in Gainesville on Saturday for the Mac Tools Gatornationals, and the weather was perfect. Took my nine year-old son to his first NHRA National, introduced him to some pretty cool folks, and scared the heck out of him . . . had him at around 1300 ft when Top Fuelers went by . . . ear plugs and all, after around 4 passes, he said, "Dad, can we get a little farther away?" Intimidating it is! Strolled thru Maingate's NitroMall . . . talk about a busy store. Something there for every level of race fan.
Since this weekend was so busy, I'll get right to it:
NHRA @ Gainesville Raceway - The NHRA Powerade Drag Racing series was in sunny Florida this week for the 36th Annual Mac Tools Gatornationals. In Top Fuel, Doug Kalitta, driving the Mac Tools Dragster, topped Larry Dixon, in a race that saw them both furiously peddling to keep the tires on the ground. In Funny Car, old buddy Whit Bazemore, driving the Matco Tools Dodge Stratus, took his first win of '05, beating Bob Gilbertson. In Pro Stock, Jason Line, driving the KB Builders Chevy Grand Am, drove around Dave Connolly's hole shot for the win! In Pro Stock Bike, veteran Steve Johnson, driving the Snap-on Tools Suzuki (and who needs a full-time sponsor), won his second event ever . . . In qualifying, Andrew Hines, on the Screaming Eagles Harley, snapped off the first sub-seven second pass ever in PSB, 6.991 @ 196.16 MPH.
NASCAR @ Atlanta Motor Speedway - Carl Edwards . . . that's all you need to know. Oh, you want more? The Nextel Cup and Busch racers headed to Georgia this weekend, and when it was all over, Carl Edwards had a two-fer, winning the Nextel Cup series Golden Corral 500 in the Scott's Ford, and the Busch Series Aaron's 312 in the Charter Communications Ford. In Friday's Craftsman Truck Series World Financial Group 200, Ron Hornaday, in the GM Goodwrench Chevy, covered the field. Don't know how I missed this, but long time friend Jimmy Kite, one of the nicest people you'll ever meet, finished 19th. Didn't know he had a ride.
F1 @ Sepang - The racing world was shocked to hear that Michael Schumacher did not win for the second race in a row. Fernando Alonso won the second race in a row for Renault, the Malaysian Grand Prix.
IRL @ Phoenix International Raceway - Sam Hornish, driving the Marlboro Team Penske Dallara Toyota, led a Penske 1-2 by beating teammate Helio Castroneves to the line in the XM Satellite Indy 200. In the Menard's Infiniti Pro Series, Jon Herb, driving the Racing Professionals Dallara-Infiniti, won his first race in the series.
ALMS - Spring Break in Sebring means its time for the great Green Park drinkfest, and more importantly, the 53rd running of the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring. The overall winner was the P1 Champion Racing/ADT Audi R8 of JJ Lehto, Marco Werner and Tom Kristensen. In GT1, the Aston Martin Racing DBR9 of David Brabham, Peter Kox and Darren Turner, gave that mark it's first win at Sebring since 1956. In P2, the Miracle Motorsports Courage C65 AER of Ian James, Chris McMurry and Jeff Bucknum took the win. The winner of GT2 was the Petersen Motorsports/White Lightning Racing Porsche 911 GT3 RSR of Lucas Luhr, Patrick Long and Jorg Bergmeister.
SCCA World Challenge - Sebring was the first round for both divisions of the Speed World Challenge. In Touring, Peter Cunningham, back in his familiar Realtime Racing Acura (I would have loved to see him back in the Nissan), topped the 31 car field. In GT, last season's champion Tommy Archer, driving the c3controls/3R-Racing/Dodge Viper, took the win.
