Autosport Development Sebring Wrap-Up
Sebring, Fla. March 18, 2005 – After a long busy winter, the Autosport
Development team finally turned the wheels on the all-new #5 GMAC /
Aramark / Trenton Forging GTO, today. The car made its first start at
the annual 12 Hours of Sebring in Round One of the SCCA Pro Racing
SPEED World Challenge GT race.
After experiencing many delays through the winter, the team unveiled
the beautifully turned-out car with a new silver/black/red livery.
Building the GTO from the ground up, the car is on the leading edge
among World Challenge GT cars.
“We really feel strongly about our direction,” commented team owner,
David Moxlow. “We’re going it alone with respect to shared information
with other teams, but we take pride in knowing we’ve got something
special. We built the car with adjustability in mind. World Challenge
will run on a wide variety of tracks this year and we wanted to be sure
the car would adapt. Last year, we got locked in to a pretty narrow set
of parameters.”
The car started today’s race from pitlane as it had not had the
opportunity to put in a practice time. The race officials allowed
Hayner to run the car for one “hardship” lap earlier in the day… so
Hayner found himself in a brand new car with no seat time.
“Well, we got a couple of laps in and even passed a few cars, but
unfortunately, something in the motor let go,” said Hayner. “We had set
the car up neutral just so I could put in some laps and get a little
seat time under race conditions. The car felt terrific with the
exception of some under steer. That’s certainly something we’ll work
out. But, all-in-all, I think it’s going to be a great car.”
“It would have been nice to show up here and get a good race under our
belts,” Hayner continued. “But with all the development we’ve done… I
mean this is an all new car from the ground up and we’ve had no one’s
footsteps to follow in… this is all our own design, so we were pretty
realistic in our expectations. Our car chief and engineer, Rob
Wannamaker has really built a pretty special piece. I’m confident we
can run up front with this car.”
The team’s next race will be St. Petersburg, Fla. April 1-3, where the
SPEED World Challenge will join the Indy Racing League on the city’s
streets.
Today’s Sebring race will air on SPEED, Sunday March 27 at 2:00pm EST.
