Freescale Semiconductor Opens Quality and Test Center in Nagoya, Japan

TOKYO--March 18, 2005--Japanese automakers boast the highest quality levels in the world, and Freescale Semiconductor has opened its Nagoya Quality and Test Center to help meet their needs for highest-quality semiconductors. With this opening, Freescale is the first foreign semiconductor manufacturer to have an automotive quality and test center in the Nagoya area, an automotive industry center in Japan.

According to Strategy Analytics and Gartner Dataquest, Freescale is the world's leading supplier of semiconductors to the automotive market. The company has been working to enhance its quality-support infrastructure in Japan as a means of further expanding its Japanese automotive semiconductor business. The Nagoya Quality and Test Center is Freescale's first site worldwide designed specifically to accommodate the needs of Japanese automakers.

Located on a site owned by Toyotsu Logistics Service Co. Ltd., at Onawa 1-3, Ozakicho, Anjo, Aichi Prefecture, the Nagoya Quality and Test Center is positioned as a critical component of Freescale's companywide strategy to achieve zero defects in its semiconductor products through enhanced quality measures. This strategy reflects the company's commitment to better meeting the rigorous quality standards demanded by the automotive market, in which advanced electronics systems are widely used.

Freescale intends to use key test data and analytical results from the Nagoya Quality and Test Center to contribute to its global quality initiatives and further improve its quality levels. The center is equipped with infrastructure, including a range of testers and special measurement instruments, that will enable it to quickly initiate and complete tests, analyses and evaluations.

"We've implemented a companywide zero-defect quality offensive, and we expect the Nagoya Quality and Test Center to play a key role in that strategy," said Paul Grimme, senior vice president and general manager of Freescale's Transportation & Standard Products Group. "I'm confident that our support for the high quality expectations of Japanese customers will also be valuable to the other markets we serve around the globe."

The adoption of automotive electronic systems is rapidly increasing. Automotive manufacturers are implementing electronics in every area of the automobile -- from the engine and powertrain to security, safety and in-car information systems. Systems for addressing environmental issues are also increasing and present even further challenges. Amid these developments, automakers require an increasing amount of semiconductor content for these more complex, advanced electronic systems.

Freescale's Transportation & Standard Products Group has a global presence with support for product development, technology, sales and quality. The group boasts an extensive product portfolio, including 8-, 16-, and 32-bit microcontrollers, embedded microprocessors, digital signal processors, analog (SMARTMOS(TM)) and sensors.
