LUCAS OIL SERIES ACTION UNDERWAY AT ORLANDO SPEED WORLD
ORLANDO, Fla. - NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series competitors turned out today for the opening day of qualifying and time trials at the Series' event being held this weekend at Orlando Speed World Dragway. This weekend's event, which runs through Sunday, is the third of seven events in NHRA's Southeast division. The event will feature competition in six Lucas Oil categories as well as the TracStar Systems Satellites Top Sportsman Series.
Today, competitors in Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas, Super Street and Top Sportsman completed their first rounds of qualifying and time trials. Qualifying continues tomorrow with the final eliminations in all categories scheduled to take place on Sunday.
In today's qualifying action, former Comp Eliminator National Champion, Mike Saye of Johnston, S.C., leads his field. Earning the No. 2 and 3 spots are Fredericksburg, Va., runner Allen Stanfield and defending Southeast Division Champion Larry Pritchett.
Claiming the top spot in Super Stock is Dover, Pa., racer Dennis Stewart. The second spot is held by Bob Dennis of Shorter, Ala. Dayton, Ohio's Dave Layer is third.
In Stock Eliminator, Bert Morgan of Charleston, Ill., wheeled his '76 Buick Wagon to the top spot in that class. Occupying the second spot is Florida's, Jeff Velde of Vero Beach, while Nashville's John Livingston is third.
In TracStar Systems Satellites Top Sportsman Series competition, Ronnie Davis of Commerce, Ga., leads pack with a 6.887 second pass at 204.03 mph. Qualified closely behind Davis in the No. 2 spot is Navarre, Fla., racer Jim Harrington. Harrington clocked a 6.888-second pass at 202.97 mph.
Saturday's racing action will feature the continuation of qualifying in all classes. Qualifying for Comp Eliminator is planned to take place at 3:30 and 6:30 p.m. Top Sportsman Series competitors will have their last shots at the Orlando quarter-mile at 1 and 3 p.m.
Gates at Orlando Speed World Dragway open Saturday and Sunday at 8 a.m. Final qualifying in all classes is scheduled to begin tomorrow at 9 a.m. Tickets, including a pit pass, are $25 on Saturday and Sunday. Children 12 and under are admitted free with a paid adult.
