Renesas Technology Introduces 64MHz M32C/95 Group Microcontrollers for Automotive and Industrial Use, Launching Top-End M32C/90 Series in M16C Family
SAN FRANCISCO--March 8, 2005--Offering Twice the Speed of Devices in the M32C/80 Group, the M32C/95 Microcontrollers Have up to 768KB of Flash, a 3-Channel CAN Interface and Many Other Peripherals |
At the Embedded Systems Conference today in San Francisco, Renesas Technology America, Inc. announced four M32C/95 Group microcontrollers, the initial phase of the M32C/90 series of top-end models in the M16C family. The new 64MHz devices are optimized for automotive and industrial applications and deliver twice the speed and more functionality than chips in the current M32C/80 series. They incorporate a high-performance CPU core that speeds program execution and a 3-channel CAN controller that simplifies networked embedded systems. Other key features include a comprehensive set of peripheral functions and 512KB or 768KB of highly reliable flash memory.
"The M32C/90 series chips are ideal for implementing gateway functions in automotive body controller systems," said Hank Pawlowicz, product marketing manager, system LSI business unit, Renesas Technology America, Inc. "For example, a single M32C/95 device can connect three CAN systems, saving cost and simplifying designs that previously required multiple microcontrollers. They also address pressing needs in industrial, OA, and communications markets for microcontrollers with the high-speed processing and excellent cost-performance necessary for boosting the intelligence of embedded systems."
The M32C/90 CPU core in the new microcontrollers offers a 15.6ns minimum instruction execution time. It delivers fast processing performance via 32-bit processor circuitry and transfer instructions, and by implementing shift instructions with a barrel shifter. The devices minimize power consumption by offering a wait mode and an option to use an on-chip oscillator as the CPU operating clock. To improve system stability, when the Xin external clock is terminated by an external source, the on-chip oscillator automatically starts oscillating to generate another clock.
A comprehensive set of on-chip peripheral functions encompasses 16-bit timers, DMAC, A/D converter, and more. Seven serial I/O channels provide LIN master support for systems equipped with communication functions. Additionally, the devices in the M32C/95 group have an on-chip non-stop debugging interface that connects to an external debugger via a single unused pin. Debugging can be performed in the actual operational state using all I/O pins without halting the operation of the microcontroller, so an embedded system can be evaluated and adjusted when installed in a vehicle, for example. This interface supports serial communication at up to 32Mbps. Thus, it can also be used as a RAM monitor with real-time capability.
To facilitate performance upgrades and software enhancements for existing systems, shorten development times, and reduce hardware/software engineering costs, microcontrollers in the M32C/95 group inherit the current M16C family instructions and peripheral functions. They maintain pin-arrangement compatibility with the devices in the M32C/80, M16C/80, and M16C/60 series, simplifying replacements. The large-capacity on-chip memory the products in the new group provide -- up to 768KB of flash and 40KB of RAM -- accommodates programs that increase in size to add features and improve functionality.
Renesas Technology continues to extend its microcontroller product lineup to meet evolving market needs. A version with a wide operating temperature range (-40 degrees C to 125 degrees C) is planned to expand the M32C/95 group. Another product currently under development will incorporate a 12-bit successive-approximation type A/D converter with a fast, 1.5us conversion time.
