Windham Finishes Third In Atlanta
2005 AMA THQ Supercross
Round 8: Atlanta, GA
February 26, 2005
Kevin Windham and his Amsoil/Chaparral/Napster Honda CRF450R landed back on
the box in Atlanta with a strong third-place performance in front of nearly
63,000 pumped-up Georgia Dome fans.
K-Dub held down the #2 spot in the early stages of the main after passing a
downed Ricky Carmichael, who'd crashed out of the lead, letting by both
Chad Reed and Windham.
Carmichael would remount, however, and charge back to pass both Windham and
Reed for the win. Reed rounded out the podium in second, while K-Dub's
Amsoil/Chaparral/Napster Honda teammate Mike LaRocco crossed the line in
fifth with Team Honda's Ernesto Fonseca following him in sixth. Jeremy
McGrath and his factory Honda CR250R took the checkers in ninth.
In only his 4th race since returning from a collarbone injury suffered in a
practice accident prior to the season, Team Honda's Travis Preston
continues to show improvement with his endurance and racecraft. The CRF450R
pilot put in an impressive ride to win his heat race over Mike LaRocco and
Chad Reed and would end up finishing 13th in the main.
In what's become an almost weekly ritual, Windham's finish allowed him to
swap places with LaRocco in the points standings, where he now sits in the
#3 spot with 136 points and LaRocco just one point back with 135.
Atlanta also played host to round two of the THQ AMA 125 Eastern Region
Supercross Series, and Samsung Honda's Steve Boniface made the most of it,
avenging a first-round DNF two weeks earlier by scoring the final spot on
the podium with an impressive third-place ride. Kawasaki's Grant Langston
won the event, with his teammate Matt Walker taking second.
Amsoil/Chaparral/Napster Honda's Josh Grant and MotoXXX Honda's Justin
Buckelew, both of whom ran in the lead pack at the race start, crossed the
line in seventh and eighth, respectively.
With two rounds down and five to go in the 125 East title fight, Buckelew,
Boniface and Grant sit 7-8-9, respectively, in the series standings.
Next weekend the THQ AMA 250 and 125 East Supercross Series head up to St.
Louis and the Edward Jones Dome.
