Remy to Sponsor Paul Dana in the Ethanol Hemelgarn Indy Racing League Entry
ANDERSON, Ind., Feb. 24, 2005 -- Remy International, Inc., today announced it has signed a three-year associate sponsorship agreement with driver Paul Dana for the #91 Ethanol Hemelgarn Racing entry in the Indy Racing League IndyCar Series, starting with the 2005 season. When the green flag flies for the opening race at Homestead-Miami, Florida, on March 6th, Dana will pilot the Toyota-powered Dallara for the 17-race season. Ron Hemelgarn, a founding team owner in the Indy Racing League, will operate the team in an encore return to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Hemelgarn has owned and operated many successful entries over the past 25 years, including cars piloted by 1996 winner and the 2000 Indy Car Series champion, Buddy Lazier. Dana follows in a line of Hemelgarn's other famous drivers: Scott Brayton (1985-89), Gordon Johncock (1988-89, 1991-92), Tom Sneva (1988), Stan Fox (1991-95), Billy Vukovich III (1989-90), Arie Luyendyk (1987), Rich Vogler (1987), Davey Hamilton (1991, 1995), Stephan Gregoire (1996), Lyn St. James (1997) and Johnny Unser (1997-99). "We have had the privilege of working with Remy in the past, and we are proud to have them back as a sponsor on the #91 car," said Hemelgarn.
A graduate of Menard's Infiniti Pro Series as runner-up in the points standings in 2004, Dana started in either of the front two rows for 10 of the 12 races, earning one victory at the Milwaukee Mile, seven top-five finishes and the remainder of his starts with top-ten finishes. "This is the chance of a lifetime to compete in the IRL with a winning team and a great group of sponsors. Together we can achieve new performance levels, both on the track and in the marketplace," said Dana, a St. Louis native and a graduate of Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.
Tracing a charter membership with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which began in 1909 with the Remy Brassard trophy runs, a predecessor to the Indianapolis 500, Remy joins a dynamic group of environmentally conscious companies bannered under the Ethanol title sponsorship. Team Ethanol was created within the fast-growing fuel ethanol industry. The program is led by the major ethanol plant design-build firms Fagen Inc., ICM Inc., and Broin Companies, and includes a host of suppliers dedicated to alternative fuels solutions to meet escalating U.S. energy demands.
"We are very impressed with the team's track record and the alternate- energy sponsors committed to an aggressive marketing campaign which has dedicated millions of promotional dollars to feature the IRL Ethanol car as its centerpiece for trade ads, billboards and commercials," said Remy CEO and President Thomas J. Snyder. "Toyota and Remy are world leaders in hybrid technologies and offer great sponsor alliances for the team. The Remy brand will get international exposure with prime-time race-fan audiences of 20 million people in 198 countries ... and growing -- an exact marketing focus for our products," he added.
Ethanol is a high-octane, high-performance fuel, derived from grain, that is clean burning, renewable and adaptable to both gasoline and diesel applications. As a growing component of the nation's gasoline supply, it delivers improved vehicle performance while reducing emissions for better air quality.
