OSRAM Opto Semiconductors Announces New LED for Small Handheld Applications; New Offering Enables Thin, Efficient Handheld Design

SAN JOSE, Calif.--Feb. 2, 20052, 2005--OSRAM Opto Semiconductors today announced its new generation of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) for handheld electronic appliance applications. At only one-third the footprint of the industry-standard TOPLED devices, the new PointLED(R) delivers the same optical, thermal and electrical performance and is the smallest LED to include an integrated reflector. OSRAM's PointLEDs are ideal for applications that require small, thin, power-efficient solutions, such as mobile phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs), optical indicators and handheld devices where small size and bright light are required. The PointLED is also an excellent solution in certain automotive applications that necessitate similar requirements.

"We are very excited to announce the newest addition to our already expansive LED product portfolio," said Ellen Sizemore, director of LED products, OSRAM Opto Semiconductors. "These new miniature solutions will not only open new doors in consumer electronics, but they will also improve existing applications, providing both critical backlighting and enhanced, brighter eye appeal."

The new PointLED, offered in surface-mount technology (SMT) packages, stands at half the height of traditional plastic-leaded, chip-carrier (PLCC-2) packages. Unique features also include the pre-molded reflector package, colorless clear resin and a round body design that makes the product flexible when paired with a light guide. The device also has reverse gull wing leads, enabling reverse mounting on a printed circuit board and reducing the overall assembly profile. Both indium gallium nitride (InGaN) and indium gallium aluminum phosphide (InGaAlP) technologies are utilized, resulting in a highly efficient and cost-effective solution.

Availability

The PointLED is available in white, blue, amber-red, super-red, green and yellow. Additional versions are currently in development and will be available as prototypes within the next two quarters. ThinGaN white, currently in development, will offer more than twice the brightness of conventional InGaN white products.

PointLED samples are now available with mass volume delivery in 12 weeks. Please contact your local sales representative for pricing. Product data sheets are available on the web site at www.osram-os.com.
