Two More Telematics Patents Bring USA Technologies' Arsenal of Patents to Sixty
Patents Improve Automobile Safety and Security, and Convert Vehicles into Mobile Offices
MALVERN, Pa., Feb. 16 -- USA Technologies, Inc. (BULLETIN BOARD: USTT) , announced today it has been awarded two more patents granted from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for patent applications relating to wireless telematics technology.
The two latest patent applications bring the Company's arsenal of automotive telematics patents to six, with three more pending, and the total number of granted patents to 60, with 27 more pending, making USA Technologies a patent leader for a company its size.
Both patents protect USA Technologies' intellectual property for connecting a vehicle to the Internet through a wireless device, to provide a global network- based vehicle safety and security system, and to allow motorists to send and receive e-mail and transact e-commerce and e-business from inside a vehicle.
"These two patents are important to the automotive telematics industry, offering significant opportunities for companies that are engaged in the delivery of telematics technology and services which deliver greater vehicle safety and security in the automotive industry, and conducting e-business from vehicles," said George Jensen, Chairman and CEO, USA Technologies. "The patents apply to technology that allows motorists to make a wireless connection with the Internet and send and receive e-mail, or conduct e-business from their vehicles. It also applies to services which allow car dealerships or the police, for example, to monitor a vehicle's safety and security, or disable a vehicle remotely, rendering it immobile if stolen, or if a safety issue is discovered."
The e-mail and e-business patented technology is particularly relevant today as more and more professionals work remotely, converting their automobiles into mobile offices and conducting business on the road.
The safety and security telematics patent has the potential to become one of the most secure anti-theft devices in the automotive industry. If a vehicle is stolen, the engine can be shut down remotely, via wireless communication, and can quickly be located.
USA Technologies officials report that the company is currently engaged in telematics licensing discussions with several key companies in the automotive telematics industry, supplying the American and Global automotive industries.
"The telematics industry is growing exponentially, and with so many people using their cars as mobile offices and entertainment centers, it's the way of the future," said Mr. Jensen. "We also believe there are some very valuable claims in this family of telematics patents that USA Technologies will benefit from."
An important component of USA Technologies' intellectual property strategy is to generate revenue from licensing from its growing portfolio of patents. USA Technologies is already pursuing business opportunities in licensing its technology to corporations in wireless networked cashless vending, energy management, and online college laundry services.
"We made a deliberate decision to expand our wireless networking technology into the automotive telematics marketplace because of mobile technology sweeping the world, and we are confident our vision and investment will ultimately deliver significant results," said Mr. Jensen. "USA Technologies is already a leader in the wireless market supporting vending, retail kiosks, and business centers, and shortly we will be announcing new and intelligent technology advancements to revolutionize every day devices, appliances and equipment servicing a variety of industries, including medical, health, fitness and leisure."
The latest patents are Patent Number 6,856,820 for In-Vehicle Device for Wirelessly Connecting a Vehicle to the Internet and for transacting E-Commerce and E-Business, and Patent Number 6,853,894 for Global Network Based Vehicle Safety and Security Telematics.
