GM Top Stories

GM Sells 279,653 Vehicles in January

·         GM sold 279,653 vehicles in January, up 1 percent compared to year-ago levels.  Truck sales were up 1 percent, and car sales were up 2 percent.  GM’s January sales were in line with the industry’s performance.  Overall, GM sales were soft, but not surprising given its strong close in December and poor weather conditions across the country during the month.

GM Truck Sales

·         GM’s January truck sales were up versus year-ago levels, with solid gains in the full-size and mid-size pickup segments and the small utility vehicles segment.  GM led the industry in truck sales by over 31,000 units in January, a wider margin than last year (over 17,000 units).  Launch vehicles, including the Chevrolet Colorado and Equinox, GMC Canyon, Cadillac SRX and new crossover sport vans helped drive the sales lift.

Full-Size Pickups

·         With 57,929 full-size truck deliveries in January, GM led the competition by more than 8,500 units.  The combined January sales of Chevrolet Silverado and Avalanche and GMC Sierra accounted for 39.4 percent of the segment.

GM Sport Utility Vehicles

·         Although GM’s total sport utility vehicle sales were down 21 percent in January, small utility sales were up 78.5 percent, paced by the new Chevrolet Equinox.  Deliveries of the Cadillac SRX were up 24.5 percent.  GM’s large luxury utility sales rose 13 percent, with year-over-year increases for Escalade, Escalade ESV and HUMMER H2.

GM Cars

·         GM’s total car sales in January rose 2 percent, driven by solid sales results of launch vehicles.  Entry-level car sales were up 9 percent, led by the new Chevrolet Cobalt and Aveo.  Mid-size car deliveries were up 2.5 percent, bolstered by positive sales results for new vehicles like the Pontiac G6 and Buick LaCrosse.

Street Talk

The following statement regarding the Cadillac product renaissance appeared in Road & Track’s February 2005 issue (Matt Delorenzo):

“This latest incarnation of the world-challenging (and by some standards, world-beating) V-

Series of high-performance offerings is yet further evidence of how far and fast Cadillac has come in reasserting itself among the premier marques that combine luxury-car attributes with the verve of a racing machine.  It’s not an easy task and only a few, principally German makes, have been able to do it.  Think BMW and M, Mercedes-Benz and AMG, or Audi and S.  Now there’s Cadillac and V.”
