Solutia Automotive PVB to be Included on '06 Cadillac DTS

Saflex(R) interlayer product will be used in all four doors as security enhancement

CHICAGO, Feb. 10 -- The Cadillac DTS, unveiled yesterday at the Chicago Auto Show, will offer laminated glass side windows in all four doors as a standard feature when it goes on sale later this year. The windows will contain Solutia Automotive's Saflex(R) polyvinyl butyral (PVB) interlayer.

Laminated glass is a glass-PVB-glass sandwich and provides a variety of benefits that add to a vehicle owner's comfort and security. Cadillac included laminated side glass as an enhanced security feature for the top-of- line luxury vehicle.

"Intrusion resistance is a key benefit of laminated glass. The tough PVB interlayer increases intrusion resistance by about 10 times over tempered glass, which typically shatters upon impact," said Jay Pyper, North American market development director for Solutia. "We are pleased to see Cadillac's commitment to its customers through inclusion of laminated side glass."

In addition to the security benefits provided by the glass interlayer, several other benefits are inherent to laminated glass:

* Protection of passengers and interior materials from UV ray penetration -- tests by the Australian Radiation and Nuclear Safety Agency showed a 90 percent reduction in UV ray penetration with laminated glass versus 60 percent using ordinary tempered glass.

* Noise reduction -- Laminated glass blocks wind and road noise by up to six decibels, contributing to a quieter more comfortable ride.

* Weight reduction -- Laminated glass weighs 11 percent less than comparable tempered glass.
