Solutia Automotive PVB Featured on All-New Buick Lucerne
LeSabre, Park Avenue Replacement Features Laminated Glass on All Four Doors as Part of QuietTuning(TM) System
CHICAGO, Feb. 10 -- As Buick continues to introduce new products to the market, its QuietTuning(TM) system becomes more of a hallmark for the up-scale nameplate. The latest to include the system is the Buick Lucerne, the vehicle set to replace both the LeSabre and the Park Avenue. The Lucerne was introduced yesterday at the Chicago Auto Show. As part of the QuietTuning(TM) system, the Lucerne will feature laminated glass side windows in all four doors as standard when it goes on sale later this year. The windows will contain Solutia Automotive's Saflex(R) polyvinyl butyral (PVB) automotive glass interlayer.
Laminated glass is a glass-PVB-glass sandwich, and offers a variety of benefits that can enhance the driving experience. One of those benefits is a reduction of wind and road noise entering a vehicle's cabin, according to Jay Pyper, North American market development director.
"With its QuietTuning(TM) system, Buick has clearly set its sights on elevating the brand to a new level of refinement," said Pyper. "Quiet is one of the criteria used to judge quality, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2002 Vehicle Acoustic Study."
Laminated glass reduces noise intrusion by about six decibels versus tempered glass; and is a part of the comprehensive array of products that make up the QuietTuning(TM) System, a vehicle-wide effort to reduce unwanted road, wind and engine noise and vibration levels.
In addition to the noise reduction benefits provided by the glass interlayer, several other benefits are inherent to laminated glass:
* Intrusion resistance -- Because of the tough PVB interlayer, laminated glass resists intrusion up to 10 times more than tempered glass. * Protection of passengers and interior materials from UV ray penetration -- tests by the Australian Radiation and Nuclear Safety Agency showed a 90 percent reduction in UV ray penetration with laminated glass versus 60 percent using ordinary tempered glass. * Weight reduction -- Laminated glass weighs 11 percent less than comparable tempered glass.
