QuietShip Certified by ABS and U.S. Coast Guard
Passes IMO tests, type-approved worldwide

Sunnyvale, CA – February 7, 2005 – Quiet Solution announced today that its novel QuietShip coating has received the coveted type approval and certifications under International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and U.S. Coast Guard for installation in berthing areas as well as mission spaces. QuietShip is an environmentally friendly (no VOC) coating designed specifically to damp noise and vibration. It offers naval architects and ship-builders a rapid-deployment, ultra-low weight and bulk, low-cost treatment used on High-Speed Craft to reduce habitability noise by up to 70%.

QuietShip was recently used to coat a Navy warship with excellent tested and verified results. X-Craft is a high-speed 73 meter aluminum catamaran developed by the Office of Naval Research. The platform is designed to demonstrate cutting-edge technologies that will enable Navy warships to operate farther, faster, safer and deliver a variety of missions with less manpower. In this real-world application QuietShip applied to the hull and mission bay of X-Craft was one-third lighter than standard navy tiles and successfully reduced the noise by 15 decibels, a 65% reduction. QuietShip, an advanced viscoelastic polymer, was designed to be highly effective on High-Speed Craft and all other aluminum, steel and composite-hull vessels.

Kurt Yankaskas, NAVSEA Human Systems Integration, considered the Navy’s top noise and acoustical expert, led the Navy’s effort for the past decade to control noise in warships and has briefed the National Academy of Sciences on the medical effects of noise stated, “Noise can make the difference between excellence and ‘at risk’ performance. The X-Craft would have been a noisy vessel without the QuietShip treatment. In the past, it has been extremely difficult to make ships quiet. We had to work hard to achieve 5 decibel improvement. Achieving 15 decibels using this Type Approved coating while cutting the weight by 36% should make this novel solution interesting to any vessel in the U.S. Navy fleet”.

Ray Fischer, a leading expert in marine noise and vibration control and president of Noise Control Engineering, stated, “Quiet Ship proved highly effective in reducing both the airborne and structure-borne noise and vibration. On the X-Craft, QuietShip reduced the airborne noise by 15 dB between 63 Hz and 2,500 Hz. QuietShip can easily sprayed onto convoluted surfaces and into tight spaces. Also, QuietShip is adaptable to different frequency ranges and operational temperatures; the standard Navy tile is not.”

QuietShip earned type approval for installation in berthing areas, while the standard Navy damping tile can only be used in machinery spaces. QuietShip is available for use on Navy and commercial vessels.
