Allen upset winner at Lucas Oil Series event at Bradenton Motorsports Park
BRADENTON, Fla. - After three days of stiff NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series competition, winners in eight categories and the TracStar Systems Satellites Top Sportsman Series, were crowned today at the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event being held this weekend at Bradenton Motorsports Park.
Starting from the No. 2 qualifying position, Artie Allen earned the upset win in Top Alcohol Dragster over reigning Division champ Guy Kelly after the Wadley, Ala., runner red-lighted in the final. En route to his final round victory, Allen eliminated Wayne Morris and Jason Cannon before then meeting up with Kelly in the final. In the final round, Allen laid down a 5.682 second pass at 251.25 mph to take out Kelly, who ran a quicker and faster 5.445 second pass at 260.86 mph, but was instantly eliminated after red-lighting.
The final in Top Alcohol Funny featured two familiar faces on the NHRA Southeast Division tour, reigning division champ Jay Payne of Claremont, Calif., and Apopka, Fla. racer Mark Billington. Showing the form that has made him a multi-time champion, Payne emerged victorious over Billington in the final round contest, running a time of 5.739 second at 250.06 mph to Billington's 5.902 second pass at 244.96 mph.
Last year the pair met up in three final rounds, with Billington earning wins at South Georgia Motorsports Park and Silver Dollar Raceway, while Payne won at the season opener in Gainesville over Billington.
