CARPENTIER CLOSES FIRST IRL SPRING TRAINING CAMP WITH A STRONG PERFORMANCE
Homestead, FL (January 22, 2005) - IndyCar Series open testing at
Homestead-Miami Speedway came to a close today with 20 cars running
nose to tail around the 2.414-kilometre oval. For Red Bull Cheever
Racing's Patrick Carpentier and Alex Barron it was three days of
intense on track preparation for the 2005 season.
Wednesday and Thursday kicked off the first days of open testing for
the 2005 IndyCar Series teams. Drivers tested on the road course
practicing their right-hand turns before today's final day of testing
on the oval track.
Although he is no stranger to racing, today marked Carpentier's first
opportunity to run in traffic on the oval with the No. 83 Red Bull
Cheever Racing Toyota.
"This was like my test in Sebring back in December," Carpentier
said. "I was able to get my feet wet and start to see how everything
works on oval with the team. Now that I understand more, I can work
with my engineers to make things better. I'm very happy with the
whole experience. It was beneficial for all and I know we are going
to improve from here. "
Carpentier completed 152 laps with a fast time of 25.1925 seconds for
an average speed of 212.206 mph. He was ranked 14th of the 20 drivers
on track today, and finished the day only .274 second off the pace
set by Buddy Rice.
For Barron, the team veteran, his day was all about adjustments and
working with a new teammate. He finished 19th with his quickest lap
in 25.4398 seconds.
"We were able to run all day and test a wide variety of car setups,"
Barron said of his 127 laps. "From here we can return to
Indianapolis, analyze each one and try a few more in Phoenix. It
wasn't a great day, but we will be able to learn a lot from it."
Defending Indianapolis 500 winner Buddy Rice topped the speed chart
on the final day of the IRL IndyCar® Series Open Test at
Homestead-Miami Speedway. The American driver posted the quickest
lap of the day of 24.9185 seconds for an average speed of 345.266
km/h. He edged fellow countryman Scott Sharp (24.9185 s) by a little
more than three one-hundredth of a second. Third quickest was Dan
Wheldon of Great Britain.
"I wasn't surprised by the car's performance," Rice said. "We were
on the pole here last year. The team was able to go through a lot of
things on the chassis and setups. I'm pleased with today's running
and I know we learned a lot about the new Panoz. It feels good."
From Homestead, both Red Bull Cheever Racing drivers will head to
Orlando for an intense week of physical training before moving back
into the cockpit early next month for the open test at Phoenix
International Raceway, Feb. 9 and 10. The IndyCar® season kicks of on
March 6 at Homestead-Miami Speedway with the Toyota 300. Race fans
will be able to watch all the action live on TSN.
