Major Global Manufacturers Launch 1394-Equipped Consumer Electronics and Consumer Products at CES 2005

  New Generation of HDTVs, DVD Recorders, A/V Receivers, PCs Feature i.LINK(TM), DTV-Link, and FireWire(R)  



A new generation of 1394-equipped consumer electronics devices and computers were highlighted at the 2005 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, as major global manufacturers introduced a record number of products including i.LINK, FireWire, and DTV-Link.

New HDTVs from LG, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, Philips and Toshiba topped the list, which also included more than three dozen new DVD recorder/players, 20 new FireWire-equipped notebook computers, new A/V receivers, media center and tablet PCs, camcorders, and even prototypes of Blu-ray DVD recorder/players with the 1394 standard. Many of the new products are from manufacturers incorporating 1394 for the first time.

Many of the new products identify the 1394 standard by using the trade names i.LINK, FireWire, or the Consumer Electronics Association's DTV-Link logos.

"The commercial labels -- FireWire, i.LINK, DTV-Link -- may vary by manufacturer and location, but they are all IEEE 1394," said James Snider, executive director of the 1394 Trade Association. "The list of newly-introduced products is long and impressive this year, indicating that major global PC and CE manufacturers understand and are committed to the benefits of IEEE 1394 for premier, reliable, high definition digital audio-video transmission. 1394 has clearly established itself as reliable, proven and popular."

The 2005 list of new 1394-equipped products at CES includes the following:

HDTVs: LG (19 different models); Philips (5); Pioneer Elite (2); Samsung Electronics (3); Sharp Electronics (9); Sony Electronics; Toshiba (9).

A/V Receivers: Denon (2); Marantz; Onkyo (2); Pioneer Elite (2).

DVD Recorders/Players: Akai (2); Daewoo (13); Denon (3); Hewlett Packard; LG (7); Onkyo; Pioneer Elite; Samsung (5); Sharp (4); Sharewood Newcastle; Toshiba (3); Winbase (8).

High Definition HD Recorder (PVR/DVR): Toshiba.

Notebook PCs: Compaq; Hewlett Packard (6); LG (9); Sharp (3).

Media Center PCs: HP (2); LG; Sharp.

LG also introduced a new FireWire-enabled tablet PC. There also were three new Blu-ray DVD Recorders/Players, listed as prototypes, including one from LG, Philips and from Pioneer. In addition, Samsung Electronics introduced 11 new 1394-enabled camcorders.
