Galle, Sri Lanka Tsunami Victims Get Big Boost From Chrysler Jeep Superstores of Southeast Michigan

The 40 Chrysler Jeep Superstores of Southeast Michigan Will Donate $25 Per Vehicle Sold Through Month of January to Relief Fund

Total Donation Expected at Significant Five Figures

DETROIT, Jan. 11 -- The 40 independent Chrysler Jeep Superstores throughout southeast Michigan have committed to pledge $25 per vehicle sold in January to the Salvation Army of Southeastern Michigan to lend support to those affected by the tsunami that struck southeast Asia and parts of Africa. The Salvation Army will use the collected resources to help the city of Galle, Sri Lanka, one of the hardest hit nations.

The total amount will depend on actual January sales figures, but it is expected to be in the significant five figures according to Jim Schebil, president of the Chrysler Jeep Superstores Advertising Association.

Thousands of people died at Galle and many more were washed away at the town's busy train station. It has been reported that as many as 20,000 to 30,000 Sri Lankans are now homeless in the city of Galle. The Salvation Army of Southeastern Michigan aims to build new homes this year, with the donations going to help the homeless.

"We want to help rebuild Galle from the ground up after it was hit so hard by this tragic natural disaster," Schebil said. "The Salvation Army people now in Sri Lanka tell us that it looks as if a huge bomb went off and even the debris from ruined homes has washed away."

The Chrysler Jeep Superstores Advertising Association is made up of the 40 independently owned Chrysler Jeep Superstores in Southeastern Michigan from Monroe to Fowlerville, and from Clinton to Port Huron.
