Toyota Awards Four General Contracts for New San Antonio Plant
ERLANGER, Ky., Jan. 6, 2005 -- Toyota Motor Manufacturing North America, Inc. announced today that the company has awarded the following contracts for the plant they are constructing in San Antonio, Texas:
- The Walbridge Aldinger/Bartlett Cocke joint venture was awarded the assembly building and press/body weld/plant office general contracts. Walbridge Aldinger, a global firm based in Detroit, and Texas-based Bartlett Cocke General Contractors formed a joint venture in May 2003. The joint venture has also been working on the site's foundation. - The Graycor/Byrne joint venture was awarded the paint/general stores and utility zone general contracts. Graycor Industrial Constructors, a North American contractor based in Chicago, and Texas-based Thos. S. Byrne, Ltd. formed a joint venture in February 2004.
These general contracts will include: managing and coordinating the remaining portion of the structural steel packages, all mechanical and electrical work, enclosure (including metal siding and roofing), concrete (including floors and process pits) and all finish trades.

Work on these projects began earlier this week. Many of the major trade subcontracts have been awarded with over 30% of those contracts going to minority-owned businesses.

In February 2003, Toyota announced that it had chosen a 2000-acre site in San Antonio to build approximately 150,000 Tundra full size trucks annually, beginning in late 2006. The new plant will represent an $800 million investment by Toyota and is expected to bring approximately 2,000 new jobs to Texas. Additionally, 18 automotive suppliers will set up operations on the site of the new plant. Those suppliers are expected to have an investment of over $150 million and employ about 1,500 people. Over the construction period, at peak times about 2,000 people will be working on the site.
