LaserCard Corporation Ships 100,000 Optical Memory Cards for Vehicle Registration Program in Delhi, India
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--Dec. 2, 20040, 2004--"Optical Smart Card" Based on the Company's One-Megabyte LaserCard(R) Optical Memory Card |
LaserCard Corporation today announced that it has shipped approximately 100,000 LaserCard(R) optical memory cards over the last three months for use as secure vehicle registration documents in a new project in Delhi, India.
"We are pleased to support this very promising application in the Indian subcontinent," said Richard Haddock, CEO of LaserCard Corporation. "We believe that Indian secure vehicle registration programs are a potentially significant opportunity for the LaserCard(R) optical memory card if the programs there expand as planned."
The Delhi government officially launched its "Optical Smart Card" vehicle registration document, known as the "RC Book," in September. The RC Book card is based on LaserCard Corporation's one-megabyte LaserCard(R) optical memory card platform, with a four-kilobyte IC chip embedded by a third party service provider. The optical memory stores a variety of information in addition to the vehicle registration, including the cardholder's vehicle tax record, accident history, biometrics, and any citations and prosecutions. This is a unique Indian application, which is being watched internationally, and was the subject of a presentation at the recent Cartes show in Paris on November 4.
It is estimated that the state of Delhi's four million vehicle owners will obtain the new RC Book card within the next few years to comply with Delhi's new law that all vehicle registrations be converted to secure optical smart cards.
